Preface

“Not only are there many pasts, there are also many histories…The histories of this or that episode are not the same in every book…History like politics…is a contended matter” — David Edgerton in his Introduction to The rise and fall of the British nation (Penguin Books, 2019).

I am not by profession an historian or genealogist, just a keen, amateur ‘family historian’. The primary motivation for my research was to discover who exactly was my great grandfather, George Thomas. However, his tale soon became just a tiny part of a story that would eventually cover almost 300 years of British history — from the restoration of the Monarchy to the middle of the 20th century.

My one recommendation is that you first read the Introduction before delving deeper into my family’s history.
